An art exhibition centre, Soto Gallery, in Ikoyi, Lagos, has opened its doors with an inaugural exhibition tagged, ‘Crack’, which will start today and will run for almost three weeks.

According to a statement sent to Merrymakers, the launch signifies the end and beginning of iDesign art into other forms. It was also stated that the gallery will help to further promote emerging and established African artists.

The founder of the centre, Tola Akerele, stated that it would examine new and improved ways of converging design, art and installation. She said, “We have created a relaxed and inclusive space that will allow us to establish and grow our iDESIGN art platform. I am excited by the opportunity to nurture young artists and encourage art appreciation of the remarkable talents we have here in Nigeria.

“This event will usher in a series of experiences at the gallery, where African art will be reflective of ideas from a renewed standpoint, enjoyed in many varied forms.

The opening show featured eight artists curated by Arin Olowoporoku a curator, cultural producer and creative director.

Shedding light on the exhibition, the statement read, “Crack refers to the first light of day; the crack of dawn. This exhibition expands on the idea of coming full circle, the end of a time that leads to the start of a new period. The artists are invited to investigate their immediate state of being and its resultant effect on the collective.”
